CCP Flipgrid Rotationals/ Virtual Ensemble Projects... How To:
NOTE: All deadlines must be adhered to. Any students not meeting deadlines may still submit their recording for assessment, but will not be included in the finished product.
Step 1- Rehearse with the supplied accompaniment (from Google Classroom). PLEASE NOTE: There is a series of BEEPS or TAPS about 5 seconds before the accompaniment begins. The reason will become obvious later.
Whenever possible, In order to give you all a little help, I will add either a previous performance into the accompaniment mix, or I may create part recordings. If a previous group is in the mix, I realize that some of the rhythms may be a little different. Just do the best you can… it’s about the Journey. :) Singing with the mix will help to keep everything together (and it won’t feel like you are singing all by yourself).
Step 2- You will need TWO devices. They can be 2 phones (iPads), or a phone and a laptop. But you will also need headphones/ earbuds/ AirPods/ whatever, which will be used with the device playing the track.
What to wear… Concert Choir, wear your Robes (Tenors and Basses, remember a collared shirt and tie underneath). Chorale, wear Black (it’s just your top in the video). PULSE- Do your Blue/ Black look.
Memorized... Or at least, don't have your music in the shot. ;)
Step 3- You can either record your video with your recording app and upload it to Flipgrid afterwards, or do it right on Flipgrid by going to FlipGrid.com on the Video Recording device. NOTE- Your Flipgrid account must be tied to your bmchsd.org email address. The CCP Flipgrid join code is ccp1org. Make sure that you navigate to the correct song project AND the correct voice part.
Step 4- IMPORTANT: PLEASE make sure there is no background noise. No AC or Heat or HVAC or fan, or running refrigerator or outside noise. Every little bit, added on to everyone else’s, will make the final sound quality poor. ALSO IMPORTANT: PLEASE HOLD YOUR PHONE IN LANDSCAPE (longwise, not up and down).
Step 5- Begin Recording your video. Say your name, AND your voice part. Make sure that you fill up as much of the frame as you can (because dozens of people in a Virtual Ensemble video can make for small videos).
Step 5A- Begin the guide track. There will be 8 TAPS. On the 5th TAP, give a LOUD CLAP (Tap, Tap, Tap, Tap, CLAP, Tap, Tap, Tap). A few seconds later, the accompaniment will start. Of course, make sure you can hear yourself (some people only use 1 headphone, but it’s up to you).
The CLAP is going to be used by me to line up everyone’s audio. But after the CLAP, I should only hear you for the whole song. Keep in mind that the video will include any musical introduction, so be ready when the intro begins.
Step 6- Sell it. Use facial expression. Do sways and step-touch if we’ve rehearsed it. Do some acting… maybe even over-acting (don’t tell Mr. Salerno I said that lol) Match up your singing to the guide vocal.
Don’t worry if it’s not perfect… Just do the best you can. I can work some magic in post-production.
STEP 7- Save the Video on FlipGrid. Keep your fingers crossed that I can actually do so many of these in the time allotted.
